What are the Commonwealth Games?

In this unit, the students will investigate the 2014 Commonwealth Games. They will brainstorm what they know about the Commonwealth Games and create a timeline of where the Commonwealth Games have been held in the past. They will locate Glasgow on a map, obtain information about Glasgow and use this to write an information report. They will identify Australian athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games, choose an athlete and create a fact file about this Australian Commonwealth athlete. The students will then consider what athletes need to do to prepare for the Commonwealth Games. They will consider their diet and create a collage of pictures which are high in carbohydrates. The students will then use the healthy food pyramid to create an athlete’s menu for a day.  The students will consider how an athlete trains. They will pretend that they are a Commonwealth athlete and make a weekly timetable showing how they would fit training around school. The students will then focus on symbols used in the Commonwealth Games. They will learn about the significance of the Queen’s baton relay and will make their own version of this baton. The students will discuss the use of a mascot in promoting the games and will write a brief description of a thistle. The students will use recyclable materials to make a piece of merchandise with Clyde, the official Glasgow 2014 mascot on it. Finally the students will view a medal ceremony and imagine what they would do if they won a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

N.B. This is an existing unit which has been modified for the 2014 Commonwealth games.
