How and Why do People Use Transport?

In this unit, the students will investigate transport. The students will identify different types of transport and will categorise them. They will create a labelled diagram, and write a description of a chosen form of transport. The students will categorise their chosen forms of transport and will formulate generalisations. The students will then cut pictures from magazines of people using transport for a particular reason. They will investigate the different purposes for using transport and will create a class book titled, “Our Getaways” showing how people use transport for holiday purposes. The students will then investigate the different ways in which transport moves. They will appreciate the need for people to operate transport and will listen to guest speakers who perform this service in the community and will then create profiles of them. The students will investigate how to use transport safely. They will identify the safety features of a bike and will create a poster showing how to ride a bike safely. The students will then choose a form of transport and will investigate the safety features of this form of transport. They will role-play safe practices when using this form of transport and will create a set of rules to follow to share these safe practices with others. The students will then investigate the forms of transport found in the local community. They will work as a group to create a large collage showing evidence of the transport system in the local community. They will then interview people in the local community to find out how this system is used. Finally the students will design and make a form of transport that may be seen in the local community in the future and they will write a description of it.
