What are the Olympic Games?

In this unit, the students will investigate the 2012 Olympic Games. They will brainstorm what they know about the Olympic Games and create a timeline of where the Olympic Games have been held in the past. They will locate London on a map, obtain information about England (Great Britain) and use this to write an information report. They will identify Australian athletes competing at the Olympics, choose an athlete and create a fact file about this Australian Olympic athlete. The students will then consider what athletes need to do to prepare for the Olympics. They will consider their diet and create a collage of pictures of foods which are high in carbohydrates. The students will then use the healthy food pyramid to create an athlete’s menu for a day.  The students will consider how an athlete trains. They will pretend that they are an Olympic athlete and make a weekly timetable showing how they would fit training around school. The students will then focus on symbols used in the Olympic Games. They will learn about the significance of the Olympic torch and will make their own version of an Olympic torch. The students will discuss the Olympic creed. They will create an oath for an athlete and a judge and then compare them to the real ones. The students will examine the Olympic flag and write about what the flag represents. Finally the students will view and describe a medal ceremony. They will create their own version of an Olympic medal and will imagine what they would do with it if they won one.
